Welcome or Welcome back Soap Fiends!!
If you are still with me at this point then you are a bonafide  , unapologetic Soap Fiend with and insatiable appetite for vintage television and "stories" of ago. Congratulations on having impeccable taste. Join me , your host Jett and I navigate the uncharted waters of a Vintage Soap Opera Spinoff

Nostalgia hits differently when it's tied to family, doesn't it? Just like my auntie's love for "Knots Landing" shaped my early television memories, I'm here to rekindle that flame and walk you through the labyrinth of the cul-de-sacs and secrets that define this prime-time classic. We'll start with a hearty laugh over my Noxzema mix-up before diving into the gripping world of the "Dallas" spin-off, spotlighting Gary and Valene Ewing's journey. And don't worry, I've done my homework on the ensemble cast to ensure our review is as authentic as the show itself.

Within the walls of the Fairgate family, the '70s spirit is alive—well before the 'Karen' stereotype could touch our beloved character Karen Fairgate. This episode peels back the layers of drama festering in Sid's household, especially with his rebellious stepdaughter Annie stirring the pot.   Annie brings a brilliant depth to our discussion, blurring the lines between fiction and the realities of familial challenges.

Finally, I'm thrilled to herald the upcoming super drop of  Season 4—keep your eyes peeled in early February where I'll be joined by my friend Erika, we'll also sink our teeth into "Dynasty" Season 4's juicy storylines, drawing parallels and contrasts that'll have you questioning which cul-de-sac you'd rather live on.But remember, as we eagerly anticipate the drama on screen, let's keep our own lives free of turmoil. I leave you with a pledge to prioritize self-care and self-respect, embracing the rollercoaster of emotions from our favorite soaps as a vicarious thrill, not a lived experience. Stay hydrated, stay moisturized, and most importantly, stay tuned for a year loaded with impassioned discussions on all the classic primetime dramas.

Speaker 1:

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome or welcome back to Stowe floor, the official gathering place for newbies. Now, this is an OG diehard fan of the golden age of primetime. Today we are reviewing and reviewing one of the most iconic primetime soap operas ever. According to a lot of people, it's the best. Who's to say Whether you're new to this or true to this? Sit back and enjoy. Tell the kids to play outside or out of sight, or they. No questions, suggestions or concerns for the next 25 to 35 minutes. Everyone else in air shop, equal. Be quiet or you will be kicked out because we are watching the pilot of not slanting. Hey party people, hello, gorgeous. Welcome back to another fun filled edition of Stowe floor, the spin off edition.

Speaker 1:

Man, we had a long time for this. I've actually had not slanting in the chamber for a while and only recently decided when to squeeze it in because, with 25, 24 and 28 episodes of season, I didn't see how this could go any further than that. I clearly can't compare apples to apples and I don't really want to on this and I want to just kind of enjoy it and accept it for what it is, and I fully did. I just and I mean, like minutes ago, finished season one, episode one, the pilot, and it's giving, it's giving something and we'll get into that Little bit of housekeeping. First and foremost, season four is not on a long pause. With not slanting, I am going to record these and drop them in rapid succession. I may even add season two excuse me, episode two to this first one. I think we'll do that. We're going to pump these out as quickly as possible. My goal is to be done by the first of February and then we'll jump right back into season four, because we're on three cliffhangers, if memory serves me correctly, and I need to see how things turn out. I can't wait to see who shot JR. I can't wait to see if they landed in the Rockies or in the Midwest, somewhere on Falcon Crest, to see who survived the crash and who didn't. And then on Dynasty, well, full disclosure. I have fully watched the first episode of season four and I watched it with my girl, erica. She will be back on. That one is such a good episode, guys, I've actually had to split that one up, so we'll probably do a week of that one, not to spoil anything, but just be prepared.

Speaker 1:

It was a great conversation. Little bit about that, little bit about books, little bit about writing and how to organize yourself when you do reviews and things like that. Lot of fun all around. I'm looking forward to the upcoming year and the upcoming seasons. But today, on today, we're going to talk about the spin off.

Speaker 1:

I had no idea was a spin off not landing, if you've been listening from the beginning. First and foremost, thank you. You know I love you so much. That was so awkward. I hate the word awkward. It wasn't awkward, it was weird, and that's okay.

Speaker 1:

I'm a little peculiar, in case you haven't noticed, but this soap opera in particular holds a special place for me because this was my auntie's favorite. I thought it was called Knox, as in Noxlema. I had those two words intertwined for many, many years. Isn't it funny how sometimes when you're a little kid, you just sort of accept that things at face value. I still think I do that to this day. Just if I don't really know a lot about something, I just kind of accept whatever the facts are. Maybe I'm not hearing it right, maybe I am, but I heard Noxlema, knox landing in Noxlema in my mind were the same thing, something to that I knew one was a show, but whatever. Couldn't really separate the two, didn't question why. I thought they were one thing or related to one another in some way.

Speaker 1:

Anyway, when doing my research for starting this podcast, this was another one that kept popping up. I did not realize it was a spinoff until I started watching season one of Dallas. At some point I must have come across an article that told me so that this was a spinoff. Okay, you all know, I had no idea it was going to be about Gary and I'm going to call her Val, still not 100% sure about Iki. I want to call her Venita. She looks like an E or an I girl, so I want to call her Vidalia and Venita all the time. That's not her name. Her name is Val. No, it's not Valerie. On the show specifically, they're like it's not you know what. Let me shut up. Let me shut up. I'm not going to be rambling on this whole time. I did manage to take notes because I decided, instead of assuming people will fall to the wayside, I'm going to go ahead and treat these people like an ensemble cast. Learn their names from the beginning so I can give you an accurate review.

Speaker 1:

I'll tell you what else this show is so hard to find. It doesn't seem to be on YouTube, not really. There's clips here and there and I've avoided some of them because there's going to be spoilers. This show ran until 1992, 93. So I'm not super concerned about any spoilers. There's going to be dozens of stories over that period of time. It also started in 1979. So this is a super long running series. I wonder how it holds up towards the end. But it is very difficult to find.

Speaker 1:

Dvds are available. They are a little bit expensive. Yeah, you're going to have to do your due diligence. It doesn't seem to be streaming anywhere and I don't know how long it won't be streaming. But hopefully you can get your hands on a set of DVDs. You can go on Etsy or whatever and check it out and see if you can watch this with me, because first episode, immediately I like it. It's not going to like the show. I like the characters immediately.

Speaker 1:

So go ahead and pour yourself out something refreshing. I think this is a semi-special occasion. Pull out your fine china, pour up something wonderful and let's jump into season one of Not's Landing, episode one, the pilot. All right, first things first. Not's Landing is not a mentholatum in views, cold cream that you smear on your face. I still use Noxema. To this day. Noxema is undefeated. I don't care what anybody says. It's not that.

Speaker 1:

Not's Landing seems to be a little nook of a neighborhood in SoCal somewhere. I'm not quite Okay. Here's the thing in modern times unless you live behind a gate in some sort of gated community, specifically in the US. I don't know of anyone who says I live in knots landing or I live in desert oasis, unless it's like a newer neighborhood and people aren't really familiar where it's at. You go all the periods by. It's developed by blah blah, blah. It's kind of weird to keep bringing up the name. They're like ooh, and this, not this not landing wind is delightful today. This not landing sun is amazing. We get it. You live in knots landing.

Speaker 1:

I'm assuming it's a subdivision and this particular story takes place on a cold dissect between four different families. Seems to be a working class, upper middle class neighborhood. All the mamas seem to stay home, all the men seem to go to work. The ages are irrelevant. Everybody's grown. These people have kids, so it's like it looks like you got a newlywed couple. You've got a more established family of one of divorcee or something. Either the guy's divorced or she is. You got the Ewing's, you got another family, so so far it's four families in this cute little nook of California. So they're near the beach. I don't really know how that works out. So they're maybe they're in LA, maybe it's somewhere else, it doesn't really matter, they're on the West Coast. Doing the most is when last we left, gary and Val I'm going to be real Val valine, that's her name. Val, no, she's Val valine, just like her name.

Speaker 1:

Val Valine showed up on more episodes than Gary did. Now. Gary, when we first time we met Gary, he looked like one of those Jenner's, he looked like Caitlyn Jenner's kids, some de Cathlon. He was tall, brown hair, good looking, kind of jacked a little bit. He freaked out and walked off the ranch because they spilled milk over papers and he had to go to work. Remember them. Well, when he comes back he's been laying low, hiding out in Val Valine's apartment for X amount of months, like a year or something like that. They'd been secretly seeing each other ever since that day. He decided to walk down the dirt path of Southwark and disappear into the sunset or into the noon, said it was like high noon. He left in broad daylight left his daughter. Now he was on two episodes of memory serves me correctly.

Speaker 1:

Val was on probably two or three. She stood up to JR, she went to have a relationship with Lucy. She was hiding Gary in her apartment. They got married and I feel like that all happened within the same breath. This seems to pick up immediately after that. So they were flown to the West Coast, remember. Ellie just couldn't take the fact that she had pressed him so hard to be a man and take care of his personal responsibility, so she bought him a house on the West Coast for him and Val just restart their life. They got remarried. They're going to start all over, all unbeknownst to Lucy.

Speaker 1:

So this, the first episode, picks up with Val and Gary and Bobby arriving at the house and they're, you know, they were reminding the audience. Oh dude, does it look exactly the way it used to Do? They look the way you remember? Of course it does. It's probably recorded within a week or two of each other. So Val's looking at the house pensively like I don't know, is this a good idea? It's just too much. Well, not only did they get a house, ellie was like let me go ahead and give you the white glove treatment. And she had a house full of furniture she wasn't using, so they loaded it up, put it on the first thing smoke in California. Now Val and Gary have furniture in their new house and Bobby's like this is great, don't forget, mama and I are the only people who really wanted this good life for y'all. Mama and I made sure y'all had this, not daddy and jock. He didn't say not daddy and jock, but he says not daddy and jock. So no sooner than they, you know, have the small conversation outside the house or they're breathing it in kind of overwhelmed. Obviously this is brand new.

Speaker 1:

A neighbor comes trotting over and this neighbor's name is Karen. Now, this is before Karen's were Karen's. You know what I'm saying. This is before Super Target, this is before Starbucks. So this Karen is dope. She's so cool, she comes over, she's super happy and she introduces herself and her family as a modern day big Brady bunch, three kids in a station wagon. Sorry, if my kids go on your nerves, don't worry about them, just send them home. Hey, why don't y'all come on over? Or she can say y'all, because she's not from Texas. Why don't you guys come over tonight for a potluck? And Val is there, you know. Oh, I mean, we don't have any pots, we don't have anything to cook. She's like don't worry about it, come on over my family and I would love to have you. Okay, so Karen is a neighbor.

Speaker 1:

Karen's last name is Fairgate. She's married to a guy called Sid. Sid comes home with a cold I don't know why this is relevant, this episode but he's sniffling and snuffling the entire time and Sid comes with a little bit of baggage. Not only do he and Karen have three children, sid has a daughter called Annie from a previous relationship, and Annie is Lucy 2.0.

Speaker 1:

Back when Val was on Dallas, the first time I saw her, they had these clownish eyebrows on her like the arc was ridiculous. It was a full 180. Just big arcs look like like the McDonald's arcs on her face. So she looked peculiar. She was so weird looking. They've toned it down. They gave her out time to let her eyebrows go in properly. She's actually quite a beautiful woman. Besides Val, it was so hard for me not to call her Valveline or Vidalia. Besides Valveline, whatever her name is, val, I didn't recognize anyone else. And Gary, I mean obviously Gary and Bobby, but Annie, annie is guess who Is the girl from Indiana Jones.

Speaker 1:

Raiders is a lost Ark, the Marion lady, remember. Later on she turns up as Shia LaBouf's mom. And what was that one? The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I was like, hey, that lady. Let me tell you what she has aged so beautifully. Not that aging is bad. Let me be very clear. Aging is awesome. I'm so pumped about it. But that is a beautiful lady. She looks almost exactly the same in Not's Landing as she did in the Skull movie.

Speaker 1:

This is the thing. She's playing a teenage. She's playing 18 and, if I remember correctly I think I watched Raiders of the Lost Ark, probably like three months ago she definitely wasn't like a teenager. Neither was Indiana Jones. They were definitely in their 30s, I thought. But she's got one of those faces, her and the lady from Father of the Bride. They just have those faces. Selena Gomez too. She's another one. Who knows how old you are? You're, however old you tell me you are, I'm just gonna believe it, cause I've seen you around long enough. You're obviously an adult, but maybe you're barely an adult. Anyway, she plays Annie, and Annie is Lucy 2.0. She's a West Coast doing the absolute most, so much, in fact, that while Karen was outside being a good neighbor and whatnot all, friendly, saying hello to her new neighbors.

Speaker 1:

Sid pulls in the driveway, he goes in the house and guess who he finds? Guess who he finds? He finds Annie in his bedroom with a dude. So in the midst of Karen introducing herself the neighborly way, sid has to now with his cold as headcoat, he probably feels like crap, he's throwing out the guy and Annie is storming through throughout the house. So the story that they basically tell is that she is from a previous relationship. I don't know if he was married previously or if this was just a relationship, but Annie's mother had been a sojourner of sorts. She was traveling all over the world. They were in Istanbul, they were in Europe, they're all over the place.

Speaker 1:

And she is in town in Nautzlanding, or at least Nautzlanding neighborhood, for two weeks. But the two weeks she's been there she's been wreaking havoc on the Fairgates day to day life. Remember, they have three other children, annie's siblings, and so Karen is trying to come from a place of like a good stepmother. It's very clear that she doesn't hate the girl, but she hates what she does. She's like okay, now this is getting out of hand. What are you gonna do about her? And the dad doesn't really wanna do anything because he feels like I haven't been in her life long enough to go in and come in now and start like trying to regulate the way she lives her life. Karen, of course, disagrees. Like she lives in our house. She is studying an example for her siblings. You better say something. He don't wanna do it. So Karen's store are not Karen? Annie storms out of the house and steals the Brady Bunch station wagon and rides around. Clearly she goes around the corner. Now, mind you, gary and Val see this and there's something niggling at Val. She's thinking herself like dang. That reminds me of my little monster.

Speaker 1:

Most of this pilot episode does revolve around that family, in particular the Fairgates. But back in the house, gary needs to leave because he has to take Bob back to the airport, so Val is chilling outside when Mr Avery, aka Richard Avery, comes over and he's got on a suit he's giving I'm a sleazy sailman or just one of those guys who's a little cocky for no reason, but in a good way. He seems pretty harmless thus far. He has to see inside the house and of course she didn't have a light bulb, so he's like oh okay, no problem, I'll loan you one. But then he goes home and it's like he forgets for a little bit. She passes out.

Speaker 1:

By the time Gary comes back, they're deep in love because they're renewly wedged. What do you call that? Okay, you can be a newly wedged Anybody can be a newly wedged. You can be 80 and be a newly wedged. But can you be a newly wedged if you've already been married to the person? Things that make you go. Hmm, the renewly wedged are all kind of hot for each other. They're kissing and smooching and when Avery comes knocking up the door two hours later, like yo, I'm sorry, sorry about that. Here's a light bulb. I promised you they take it. And then they got to go over to that pot. Look, aka, it's just a dinner, because they didn't bring any dish over at the fair gates. Now, annie, of course, is nothing, if I remember correctly, but conversation goes pretty smoothly. They're not really talking about too much, but dinner is a little bit uncomfortable.

Speaker 1:

It would appear that these people in this neighborhood all get along well and they're gonna have cocktails at another family's house right after, so they invite Gary and Val. All right, so let me go down the list. I said the. We got the fair gates, the Avery's. Oh so Richard Avery, the neighbor that came over with the light bulb, he has a wife named Laura.

Speaker 1:

So far this episode she didn't really do much. She's just like, hey, how are you? She's being all neighborly and such. And she does get to ask Val about children. She says, go, you guys having that chance to have a kid, yet have you. Val goes on and on and we have a daughter. She just lives in Texas. So she admits that they have a daughter. She lives in Texas and the lady didn't really push it. I might be mixing that up because she does talk about her daughter later on. I'm just trying to get the bit players out of the way for this episode and we'll get to the meat and bread of it. All right, so we got the Avery's and the fair gates. Then you got the wards. Now the wards seem to be the younger kind of hip couple. You got Kenny and Ginger. Ginger, I'm not calling her dumb, but she's blind to whatever her husband is doing.

Speaker 1:

And I say this because she and her husband are listening to records. How cool is that? Like records, really listening to records. There's eight billion chords dripping from the back of his sound system. It reminded me of my dad. Like I have this very specific memory of being in our first house and in my parents' closet. They had a larger than normal closet for a house, that size Like it was actually a walk-in closet, and my dad had all these crates of records like lined up around the wall they made like a whole perimeter and his sound system or stereo system Actually everyone's stereo system was just massive, like the speakers were huge. It just brought back so many memories. I don't remember my dad having chords dripping across the living room. But hey, maybe he's, maybe my dad's just better at rearranging wires.

Speaker 1:

I don't know Whatever reason they're dancing. They're here right at the door. Go to answer. And it's Annie. Now I'm thinking to myself okay, where did she drive? She drove across town, she drove within the coldest section. Maybe she drove around first and then she parked at their house and she tells Ginger, ginger, I really need to talk to Kenny, is it okay? And Ginger's like, okay, cool, I'm going to go ahead and go to the cocktail party. She's all smiley and lovey-dovey. She's got the hearts in her eyes. She goes across the street, leaving Annie who was Lucy 2.0, and Kenny. Clearly they have a pass. So once Ginger gets to the party, everyone's like hey, girl, hey, where's Kenny? Oh, he's talking to Annie.

Speaker 1:

Annie was upset about something. Karen hears this and she's had all she can take. She's like oh, not today, satan, not today. I really like Karen. Let me just go on the record saying I really like this woman. She's got a hoonus.

Speaker 1:

So she waltzes over to Kenny and Ginger's house where she opens the door because there's no knowing to knock. Now she knows what's going on and she sees Annie all over Kenny and he's all she's like oh, this is Annie, oh, Kenny, it was so hot last week, don't you think so? And he's like well, yeah, it was hot, but not hot with my wife in the next room. So clearly something happened. They hooked up the week previous. Karen's like you know what, annie, get out, get out, get out, get out, gone.

Speaker 1:

She leaves Kenny immediately. First thing he says is I just want you to know that she seduced me, which is oh, that's another topic for another day. But that, just that gets under my skin so badly, karen. He must get under her and her skin too, because she's like you know what, spare me, you're not nearly as charming as you think you are, especially not to me. Let me tell you something Keep your hands off that little girl. I don't care if she is 18 or not. Keep your hands off of her. You're lucky. It's me who came over here and not my husband, because my husband's not going to ask you who seduced whom. Mind your business. Keep your hands off the jailbait. Okay, bye, baby. Then they walk across the street and go to the party like nothing's happened.

Speaker 1:

Okay, it is at the party that I start to remember a couple of different things. I'm calling it a party. It's a get together, it's a kickback cocktail hour. Gary is over talking with the men folk, while Val is sitting on the bench talking with the women folks. Now they start asking questions, as one does. Oh, who are you, ewing? Ewing, ewing of the text of the oil, ewing, actually, rewind that a little bit.

Speaker 1:

When Avery came back with the bulb, the light bulb, and gave it to Val and Gary, he asked about their name and he's like are you the same, ewing, like from the Texas oil? And Gary's just like yeah, but he changes the subject immediately. You can tell it's not something he wants to talk about. We, the audience, already know why. So it's brought up again at the party and he's brushing it off and Sid, who's Karen's husband, he asked him you know, gary, what do you do? Oh, nothing. Yet I'm going to start looking for a job tomorrow. I had all the forgotten. Gary didn't really have a job. Gary was a bit of a nomad. He'd been wandering around for a while trying to find himself and I also totally forgot him about him being an alcoholic completely forgot about that.

Speaker 1:

Now Val is looking. She didn't seem to be looking at him because by this point Annie comes over and Annie makes the scene. Val introduces herself to Annie and then she's. Annie asked her which one is her husband and talks to get that. When she makes this whole speech about wanting to run in the ocean with her clothes on and then stripping on the beach and then rolling around in the sand like a piece of pork chop or something I can't remember what meat she described, and she asked who wants to do this. She's purposely going after the men and you can tell she's doing it to get under her dad's skin. So as the episode evolves, it becomes clear that Annie is doing all of these things. She's acting out because she wants to embarrass and upset her dad. Val clocks this because of course she has her own little monster back in Dallas who does things very, very similarly. So in bed that night after that whole scene it was quite embarrassing Sid had to kick his daughter Annie out of the party and remind her she wasn't. She was grown, but she's not that grown. You can't really be at this party. You weren't invited.

Speaker 1:

Val and Gary are in bed, kind of going over the events of the day, and Gary is in his feelings again. Now this is going to get on my nerves. He stormed off in Dallas because you know, he was pressured. It was too much pressure, he couldn't take it. Mind you, he's a full grown man. The next time we see him in Dallas he's picking up yet another suitcase to run off one more time because he is sick. The death of this value. Putting too much pressure on me, don't pressure me, how dare you? She's like okay, okay, I'm sorry baby, I'm sorry baby. Mind you, she's working the jobs, keeping the money flowing. But then they come into this house, they happen upon this house because Gary's mother is riddled with guilt and all these things are handed to them. So I'm like, oh yeah, they actually didn't have, they didn't buy that house.

Speaker 1:

Val's the only ones who've had a job in the past. In the past she's been a waitress. She does whatever she has to do to live wherever she needs to live. Gary's not used to that. So she's actually thinking about if this is a good idea to live here, because they've seen two outbursts already and it's just kind of weighing on her that Lucy still doesn't know that they're married and that they live in California.

Speaker 1:

Bobby made a comment about this right before he left. He's, like you know, still business. But I don't think it's smart. I don't think it's a great idea to keep this sort of information from Lucy. She's going to be super pissed when she figures it out. You better tell her sooner rather than later. She that's where Val's coming from Like crap. This isn't a good idea. Maybe we should go home and make things right. Gary has had an attitude all night because in his mind he's like I know you were watching me and you think I was going to take a drink in front of those people. You think I want to be a drunk. She was just like what? I'm sorry, what Did you hear? Anything I said about our little monster. He don't hear all that. Skip him.

Speaker 1:

The remainder of the episode deals with the runaway Annie. Annie has yet another fight inside the Fairgate's house. Looking at my notes, and this one is really bad. Like the mom, karen, her whole point is you just can't do this. You have to straighten up and fly right. I know you want to be here because you're wearing your sisters clothes. Why don't you just be a part of the family we want you to be? She's not having it, annie. That is, she breaks a mirror and flies out the door. This causes a fight between the parents and the mom's. Like you know what? Absolutely not. Get your daughter and chat. Well, she eventually comes back. Guys, she comes. I might be mixing up something.

Speaker 1:

This all happened in one night. I guess One or two nights. The girl had run away again, but she took her little sister with her, this time Her 15 year old sister, and they come back from the beach sopping, wet and drunk. And that's when the mom was like oh no, hell, no, she's got, she got to go, she got to go. I want her and her teens out of here tomorrow, or me and my children are out of here tomorrow. You make the decision.

Speaker 1:

Well, of course, that's when the girls go in and they change and that's when the other fight happens. Like the Annie comes down the stairs with her sisters and she has a backpack and Karen pulls her aside, like stop acting out, you know you want to be here. Stop pretending like, just stay, we want you to be here. That's what she breaks in there. And then that's when the parents out of the fight. He's like, okay, you want to know to make them. Fine, fine, fine, fine, I'll leave. I'm making a choice, you want me to choose? So he's like I'm going to choose Annie.

Speaker 1:

Hmm, very difficult, I thought to myself watching that now. Okay, I would never want to be in that position and the optics aren't great either way. You're either quote unquote abandoning Annie, your oldest child, who you don't have really have a relationship with, or you're going to abandon the children you raised. Either way, it doesn't feel good and this is just coming to a head for all the wrong reasons. The wife's coming from a place of you have got to discipline her and we keep letting her get away with things. This isn't going to work. She was also pointing out that you know what 15 year old daughter actually came home, this time drunk from the beach. God forbid, what if something had happened? I can't allow this one to make her my mind think that it's okay, because it's not, not in my house, not today, not tomorrow, not ever. I love me some. Karen immediately, my favorite character on here.

Speaker 1:

Eventually, annie happens upon the wrong person. He thinks she's soliciting him. She goes to the clean and by some miracle, mind you, this is all within one night. She calls the Ewing's and I'm like y'all didn't have a light bulb, but you had a whole landline installed. I guess they did and I guess they passed around their number at the party, because I can't for the life of me figure out how Annie would have come across their phone number. She calls, annie calls not only have the phone number, but memorize it. She calls her from jail. She's like hey, can you pick me up? Don't tell my parents. I mean says cool, bet, I'll come pick you up, but I want to go to the ocean afterwards. I'm paraphrasing Okay, we're nearly into the episode.

Speaker 1:

Long story short, the fantasy that Annie had it, or basically expressed to the party at large, was acted out by Valveline. Valveline has never seen the ocean. Let her tell it. So she runs into the ocean with her clothes on and she leaves all of her other things, all of her personal belongings that were on her person. She leaves them on shore. Now Annie has the opportunity to steal them, but she doesn't. So they have a heart to heart. After the fact, mind you, valveline is thinking about Lucy, her little alien, the entire time, and Valveline just wants to know why do you hate your dad so much? It's so obvious you hate him.

Speaker 1:

Short version through a series of very unfortunate events, annie's grandmother has passed on. Her mom is either on the mend or she's been committed to some sort of insane asylum never to be seen from again, and her dad is healthy, so he's totally the only person she can hate. That is such an interesting thing, because I think a lot of times in real life you do that when you don't want to. Have you ever been frustrated at work and your spouse walks in the room and suddenly you remember some or some sort of insignificant whatever that has happened between you guys in the last month and you start taking things out on them. I can totally understand where she's coming from and she's being super blatant with it, and she also knows that her father is going to allow her this space because he hasn't been in her life long enough to tell her what is right and what is wrong. But by the end of the episode things begin to work themselves out.

Speaker 1:

It is a full focus on this particular family and it is a reminder to the people from Dallas who watched. Clearly people watch this show because it was a spin off with Dallas. It's a reminder to the audience that Gary and Val Beline have the exact same problems. It does sit with me a little bit funny to think this is a whole married couple Right. It's like it doesn't even matter in my eyes if you're married or not because you have a daughter, whether you guys honor your vows, whether you remarry, whether you marry other people, what difference does it make? It makes no, never mind that you don't have a ring on each other's finger when you have a daughter.

Speaker 1:

It pisses me off, quite frankly, that Gary gets to kind of wait until the moment is right for him to step up. He skirts around any sort of responsibility. That has been, mind you, in the three episodes he's been in. That has been the constant. That has been the, the truest fact, the truest form of his being is that he will avoid responsibility by any means necessary. How you can have an 18 year old daughter which is like well, if Val and I don't work out, we don't want to bring Lucy into it Guess what homeboy.

Speaker 1:

That's a grown woman at this point. Why haven't you been fostering some sort of relationship with her before now? It irritates me. I hate to start this show off on that foot, but that's where I'm at. I can't stand no full grown man looking like Gumby. Oh, I don't want to take them. I can't do that. I can't go back. I can't do XYZ. Gary, get it together. Perhaps that's the title of this episode. Gary, get it together. No one wants to hear your sad, sappy love story Because at this point, like I said, lucy is a grown woman. But it's too much pressure, too much pressure. I hate my family. Get over it. You have living in a free house. You're about to get a job as a car salesman, which I don't think he can hack. But we're going to see how all that turns out. All right, guys. Thank you so much for joining me today.

Speaker 1:

This has been season one, episode one of Not's Landing Fully committed. I can see why the show was popular. Like I said, karen not the modern Karen Vintage Karen's are so dope. She came over to introduce herself to her new neighbor. She's friendly, she's a good stepmom, she's a good mother, she's bold, her and her husband are not afraid to tell. Let each other know how they feel and I am all in. I'm totally curious about the other neighbors and I have to say, as I think back, I don't know many ensemble casts just like this. I guess desperate housewives all took place within one cul-de-sac or one street with stereo lane, if memory serves me correctly, and I'm sure there's one more show. But I love the fact that everyone we're going to get to see four different stories, potentially each episode, instead of one family's version of the people in their home story. I love the fact that it's people outside of each other's homes, kind of mixing and mingling and dealing with life as it comes at them. All right, guys, that's it. That's all for this episode.

Speaker 1:

Join me next time as we explore season two, season one, episode two of Not's Landing. Don't forget that season four is going to start at the very beginning of February with a super, super drop. Okay, in the meantime, in between time, please be kind to yourself. If no one else treats you with respect, you got to respect yourself. Okay, chin up, chest out. We don't hold our head down around here. Mind your own business. Stay hydrated, stay moisturized and moisturize every last bit of your drama on TV. Bye.
